“Don’t exclusively breastfeed. Your breast will sag and lose its shape.”

“You’ll never be this small again.”

I was determined to prove these nay-sayers wrong, and I did! My breasts weren’t saggy; after breastfeeding, I returned to my pre-pregnancy weight, and my menstrual cycle did not worsen.

But as I got older, I wanted that “mom bod.” I wanted those hips. I was ready to look like a grown woman and not a teenager anymore.

Society can be a tough critic, especially when it comes to postpartum bodies. We’re bombarded with images of celebrities who seem to effortlessly bounce back to their pre-pregnancy bodies in no time. We can’t allow ourselves to fall victim to the façade of what the internet has for us. Let’s be real here – not everyone has access to personal trainers and chefs.

Focusing on your body image has to do more with your ego than your connection to your higher self—who you are and who you are really meant to be. By focusing on this one aspect, it is easy to lose sight of your purpose. You get lost in the way others perceive you to be because you are looking for acceptance in others. You are already validated.

I gotta be real, the societal pressure and unrealistic expectations of moms to bounce back after birthing a child is disgusting. As a mom of 3, I can admit that I didn’t bounce back right away after having my 3rd child. I was older, had more responsibilities to take care of and bouncing back in shape wasn’t a priority for me. My main priorities were my mental health and making sure that all three children felt loved and supported by me. Introducing a new sibling to your other children isn’t something to take lightly. This is new for them just as being a parent again to a newborn.

I would love to tell you that your weight won’t bother you after delivering your baby, but sadly that’s not true. You are going to care what your body looks like and what you look like in your clothes. You will be filled with a whirlwind of emotions from your mind to your physical. Everything will be happening so fast that sometimes the things you thought you would prioritize at first might end up being the last, like your diet, especially if you don’t have help. But the most important thing is your mind to ensure you have a happy, healthy baby.

Let’s face it, society makes moms feel like they need to return to their pre-baby bodies as quickly as possible. But here’s the truth: there’s no rush and no one-size-fits-all timeline.
